Corrective Jaw Surgery

Do your top and bottom jaws line up correctly? Do your teeth fit comfortably within your jaw? Similar to the way in which braces straighten teeth, corrective jaw surgery repositions a misaligned jaw. Signs You May Need Jaw Surgery

The best candidates for jaw (orthognathic) surgery are those with an improper bite or jaws that aren’t positioned correctly. If you’ve found that your upper and lower jaws are growing at different rates, you may be experiencing problems with chewing, speech, oral health, and appearance. Injury and birth defects also affect jaw alignment—an issue that can be correct with jaw surgery.

Repositioning of your jaw may be required if you have difficulty in one of the following areas:

  • Chewing, biting, or swallowing
  • Speech
  • Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
  • Open bite
  • Protruding jaw
  • Breathing problems

Jaw Surgery to Treat Sleep Apnea

If you struggle with sleep apnea, a disorder in which a person repeatedly stops breathing while asleep, your jaw bones may not be working in tandem with muscles around your face and neck. We use corrective jaw surgery to realign your jaws and teeth and open up your airway. We have patients that have said that the whole family slept better once the patient’s snoring was corrected through surgery. Corrective jaw surgery can be a solution for those dealing with excessive fatigue, loud snoring, sleepiness during the day, and morning headaches, all due to sleep apnea.

Consultation and Evaluation

Dr. Strawn begins the process of evaluating your jaw by performing a complete examination with X-rays and by collecting your medical history, including when your symptoms began—at birth or after birth as a result of hereditary factors, environmental influences, or trauma.
